This series is named "The Lasting Future", which was in progress from 2018, and includes a combination of various media, including photography, video, installation and text. The main exploration direction of this work is try to construct a new system generation logic from the two research paths of ‘non-artificial natural’ and ’urban spectacles’, and piece together possible preview of the future world's existence based on the visual fragments and contexts of the present. I adopts the perspective of a skeptic and regards everyday environments with a subtle, transient intuition, inspiring us to question the true nature of the world we live in.

I adopts the perspective of a skeptic and regards everyday environments with a subtle, transient intuition, inspiring us to question the true faces of the world we live in.The images taken from the urban space are about things that are common but often ignored by us. I pulled them out separately, modified some details in the original image and then presented them in different combinations to create a sense of distance and uncertainty from our daily experience. The principles of image acquisition and modification are based on our daily experience as a reference. There is nothing particularly strange about what the viewer sees in each image and its combination, almost correct, but at the same time might feel strange. Through the defamiliarization of daily details and the resetting of experiences and memories, ‘ The Lasting Future ’ presents an urban scene in which humans are absent, a metaphor for possible preview fragments of the future world.

Most of the fragments used to combine the ‘ The Lasting Future ’ series are common sights or objects in our daily life. For example, the plants growing in the corners of urban space , the artificial objects that are common but often ignored by us, such as ceilings, exhaust vents, and so on. Therefore, the creation process of ‘ The Lasting Future ’ is like a process of building blocks with different visual modules. Through their combination, from one scale to another, from concrete to abstract, gradually constructing a seemingly common but unfamiliar urban landscape.

The first exhibited version
Chinese European Art Centre, 2018

The first exhibited version of The Lasting Future at CEAC
The first exhibited version of The Lasting Future at CEAC

This is the first exhibited version. Through the combination of photographs, videos and moving-sculpture, a status of alienation of the public area is presented. This status is inconspicuous and undetectable in the urban space dominated by human beings. All the visual segments constructed this work are from our real world. But when the viewers are placed in this constructed ‘world’, they feels the subtle and unbelievable changes have taken place in the details, which makes this ‘world’ defamiliarize macroscopically.

Depending on the situation of the exhibition site, different videos will be intercepted to present. The following are a few screenshots of the videos. There are no obvious narratives in the content, and most of them are about plants or artificial objects with a strange sense of movement.

I’d like to specifically mention the plant images that account for a large proportion of this work, such as the green plant images directly covering the exhibition wall, and the dynamic video of the plant appearing in the image, which are all temporarily growing in the corner of urban space, not belonging the part of the artificially planned urban greening.

In addition to photos and videos, the mechanical moving sculptures are also part of visual modules of ‘ The Lasting Future ’ series. During the exhibition, they might appear inside the video or appear as sculptures in the exhibition hall but at the place that are not easy to be spotted immediately, such as at corners or on roofs. The picture and video below show a moving sculpture hung on the roof. It produced a cicada-like cry when it stretched, liked an alienated creature between organic and inorganic. Its presentation implied a precursor to a new type of lifethe future will be separated from what we already know.

A wall of green plants composes a vigor green image. The tidy and indifferent city is mirrored in the one-way glass of a high-rise building. There seems an unknown eye is gazing at it. Next to it are the still-frame images of several artifacts (like air-vent, air conditioning and wall tiles), piled under the ongoing video showing nature. This work construct an intertextual world that is similar but different from the real world, causing a kind of estrangement to the daily spectacle."

In the exhibition venue, in addition to the output of the still-frame image, there is also a material object, the ceiling of an office building, vividly presenting the intertextuality between reality and reproduction.

The version of this exhibition only presented a combination of three fragments: two pictures and an electric device.
Rolling Snowball 12 |Víkurland 6, Djúpivogur, Iceland | 2019
The electric device was installed in a box and placed on the ground. When it is in operation, the magnetic field around this box will be confused, so the compass placed around will appear disorderly. It refers to the vertigo caused in the urban jungle.

The protagonist of the image below is still the short-lived plants that grow wildly in the corners of urban space. I color-graded the original image, deleted the context that reflects the specific environment, and formed a frame similar to the stage or window. Compared to the plants that did not change the color in the previous two versions, here, I tried to use fire red as the main color of this image to make the scene farther away from the real experience. As an index, which points to the impossible or all possible future.

This image is of a shutter. The blocked sunlight passes through the gap to produce two rainbows of light and shadow on the image taken by the camera. The lines and halo in the image will cause the viewer's visual illusion, which will cause dizziness while staring.

Through their combination, I try to make a kind of multi-level experience to represent our world and create a kind of mysterious illusion and depth in it. Seen that our perception of reality is multi-level, I tried to superimpose one layer of experience on top of another. The multiple superpositions make the familiar experience begin to be unfamiliar.

They must be about the depiction of the visible world, but different from everything that we have seen.”
